Ryder Cup Selection Process

To be honest, I think that the current system is pretty effective. This year we were lucky in that even our top players who qualified quite early on (Westwood, Sergio, Karlsson) continued to play good golf after they were secure, but in recent years that hasn't always been the case. Pierre Fulke made the team at the Belfry largely on his big-money performance at the World Matchplay, while McGinley made it on foot of a win in Wales, albeit after only playing 36 holes. As it turned out, they were both heroes in the match, but it was possible to gain a place in the team and lose form.
I don't think this is as easy now - we've seen Darren and Kaymer both pick up two wins and (in Darren's case) miss out by a fair margin. However, the availability of two picks allows the Captain to pick a player coming into form. In other words, it's a perfect way for the Darrens of this world to make the team. Darren will never be the most consistent player in the world - he might go win, missed cut, win, missed cut. He's a streaky player but if he's in any form you want him in your team.
As regards having 4 picks, I'm not sure...I don't think you can fault the players who qualified lower down the list on merit - look at Oliver Wilson's performance in Gleneagles - if he's the weakest member of the team ZInger must be pretty scared!
I think 2 is enough - making the Ryder Cup team is such a big thing for so many players - the ten who made it deserve it above anyone else, and I don't think it's fair to leave more than 2 up to the Captain's discretion. Just have a look at our team.
I think Zinger picking Mahan is disgraceful - yes he deserves it on form, but if a guy makes comments like that about what'll be the most important week of some of his teammates' careers, he shouldn't be there. His comments were along the lines of "Cristiano Ronaldo's a slave" again. Leave him out on principle.
The RYder Cup is about more than just winning.
